Sec 2 WB page 53, Ex. 6. What does the word “most” refer to in “but most walked past”? The answer in the TG is “people who passed by the man in old clothes.” I didn’t find this answer in the passage.

The whole point of reading comprehension is to get you to think about what you read and to understand pronoun references. This is a question about pronoun references. The whole sentence in which most appears is this: Some people threw coins into his hat, but most walked past. You have to understand that most here is a pronoun used instead of the noun phrase most people. And then what people are we talking about? Not all the people in the world or in that town, but those people who walked past the man.
